Department: Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Nick graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2005 with a PhD in Biomechanics. He subsequently joined Northumbria University where he is now Professor of Aerospace Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Director of Postgraduate Research for the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. Nick works with a range of collaborators from around the world in research relating to aspects of musculoskeletal dysfunction. Most notably, he has worked closely with the European Space Agency (ESA) since 2009 due to the relevance of deep spinal muscle deconditioning to astronaut rehabilitation. As a result of this collaboration, Nick has acted as an advisor to ESA in relation to exercise after spaceflight. Nick is an Executive Board member of the UK Space Life and Biomedical Sciences Association, where he chairs a steering group developing a national strategy for space biomedicine related to ageing. He is also an editorial board member of the journal Sports Engineering, Journal of Functional Morphology and Kinesiology, and the World Journal of Orthopaedics, and is Associate Editor for the Journal of Orthopaedics and Trauma. @nickcaplan23 @NUaerospacemed Faculty Associate Pro Vice Chancellor Research & Innovation Department: Nursing, Midwifery & Health Catherine is Associate Pro Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. She is a medical sociologist and before joining Northumbria University in January 2017 worked at Newcastle University, where she was promoted to a Personal Chair in 2014. Catherine’s personal research focuses on experiences of living with chronic disease/s and ageing and how health care technologies can be used to support and manage these. She leads research and collaborates with colleagues from a range of different academic and clinical backgrounds. She is an experienced and successful postgraduate research supervisor and examiner, with a strong commitment to mentoring and developing others. Reader in Education Department: Social Work, Education & Community Wellbeing Sean McCusker is a Reader in Education and joined Northumbria University in 2015. He has a background in Engineering with a Ph.D in Civil Engineering. However, since moving to Education, he has spent many years in educational research and development. He has worked on large scale Assessment projects, including the World Class Arena and World Class Tests and the KS3 ICT Tests. He has been applying creative ideas to adapt practices and techniques from a range of environments for use in education. He has led projects in Storytelling and ICT-enabled distance learning. He has been and continues to be involved in a number of European Projects, taking part in and leading the UK partnership in projects on; Girls and STEM, Girls and Technology, LEGO® Serious Play® and Seniors and Technology. His research interests are centred on Understanding and Communication within broad educational contexts. This covers many strands including; developing methods for representing large and complex data sets, understanding how data is interpreted and used, Assessment and Assessment for Learning and LEGO® Serious Play®!
Careers and Employment Service, University of Northumbria I have many years’ experience as a Careers Adviser working with Schools, Colleges and Universities. I have a degree in History from Newcastle University and a postgraduate diploma in Careers guidance from Northumbria University. I am the lead Careers adviser for work with PGRs at Northumbria University and this role have delivered several sessions as part of the Professional Researcher development Programme including Careers in Academia, Careers outside Academia, Using LinkedIn for Career development and CVs and applications. The focus of my session is on how to get into an Academic Career PGR Student representative Psychology Department of Health and Life Sciences I have a background in both Geoscience and Art History. I hold a Masters with Distinction in Psychology (conversion), and I am currently working on my PhD in the Psychology Department at Northumbria University. My project is methodological, focusing on meta-analyses and the cumulativeness of research in psychology. Other topics of interest include statistics and psychometrics, qualitative research methods, and family estrangement. I currently teach on Psychological Research Methods modules at both second year undergraduate and Masters level. PGR Student Department of Health and Life Sciences Léa M. Martinon holds a Masters with Distinction in cognitive psychology from Université de Bourgogne, France. She is currently doing her PhD in the Psychology Department at Northumbria University in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Her project focuses on neuro-correlates of mind-wandering in an aging population. Other topics of interests are prospective memory, creativity, mindfulness, and ubiquitous phenomenon like mind-wandering or déjà-vu. Léa currently leads the second year undergraduate Creativity module at Northumbria. As PsyPAG representative of the consciousness and experiential psychology division, she hope to enable fluid transmission and sharing of experience and knowledge between postgraduates.
